THE CHURCH RESTS ON CHRIST, NOT YOU; YOUNG CHRISTIANS TOLD
Posted on Wednesday October 12, 2022Story: Emmanuel Ashong, Accra
Young
Christians have been admonished to eschew the practice of viewing themselves as
the foundation of the church and rather recognise Christ Jesus as its true foundation.
The
call was made by the Accra Diocesan Coordinator for Evangelism, Mission and
Renewal, the Very Rev Richmond Abaka at a Thanksgiving Service held at the
Bethel Methodist Chapel, Kokomlemle on Sunday, October 09, 2022 to climax the thirteenth
Wesleyan Revival Outreach.
According
to Very Rev Abaka, “We should look at the church as a holistic. Do not take the
church as a subset of something, it’s a holistic – adult, middle [age] and the
young” adding, “So the young people should not say we are the ones who stand
and travail in prayer so the church rests on us. It does not rest on you”.
“The
church rests on Christ. Don’t let anybody pride himself that the church is on
us, it was built on us, my father gave this building,...whatever it is, the
church was a foundation from Christ Jesus, not from any human being”, Very Rev Abaka
stressed.
Preaching
on the theme for the Revival Outreach, “Discipleship: Living the Transformed Life
in Jesus Christ”, Very Rev Abaka noted that discipleship is a learning process and
urged every disciple to see himself as a servant.
The
four-day Wesleyan Revival Outreach programme which was organised by the Accra
Diocese of The Methodist Church Ghana came-off at Kokomlemle from October 06 -
09, 2022.
The
speaker for the programme, the Rev Kofi Agyekum-Agyen who is the immediate past
Assistant Synod Secretary of the Accra Diocese and a Circuit Minister in the Kaneshie
North Circuit, told congregants not to seek the acceptance of human beings but God’s,
noting “a true disciple of Jesus must not seek to please man but look up to Him
[Jesus]”.
Drawing
lessons from the biblical account of Paul and Silas in jail, Rev Agyekum-Agyen said
the two missionaries never complained but praised God even in trouble. He therefore
encouraged Christians to trust God to intervene in times of trouble when they call
on Him.
The
Superintendent Minister of the Kokomlemle Circuit, the Very Rev John Buah Kwofie
prayed for new converts won to the Lord during the four-day programme.
The
Wesleyan Revival Outreach is an initiative of the Methodist Bishop of the Accra
Diocese, the Rt Rev Emmanuel Borlabi Bortey to reach out to souls in all the 24
Circuits of the Church in the Accra Diocese with the Word of God towards an agenda
for revival and growth set forth in the new Methodist Strategic Plan 2022 – 2028.
