NAMING BIBLE CLASSES AFTER LEADERS TO CEASE – BISHOP BORLABI BORTEY

Story: Emmanuel Ashong, Teshie

Effect July 2022, the practice of naming Methodist Bible Classes after Leaders of the Church in the various Societies will cease.

The age-old practice will be replaced with the use of biblical names, names of past Ministers or biblical virtues.

This was made known by the Methodist Bishop of Accra, the Rt Rev Emmanuel Borlabi Bortey on Thursday, April 28, 2022 during his address to the 61st Annual Synod of the Diocese hosted by the Teshie Circuit at the Joseph Afotey Aku-Boye Memorial Methodist Chapel, Teshie North.

He disclosed that “Superintendent Ministers have been given up to the end of June [2022] to ensure that we make a transition from naming Classes after Leaders to the use of biblical names or names of past Ministers or biblical virtues such as Charity, Love, Patience, Grace etc”, adding “each Society is to decide which format they wish to adopt”.

Bishop Borlabi Bortey also informed delegates of the Church’s decision to keep Bible Class membership at a maximum size of 15 members explaining “This is to ensure effective pastoring. Class Leaders should know their members thoroughly, their homes, family, work place etc., and should be able to look for them immediately any one is absent for a short while without tangible excuse; and the members should also know each other thoroughly for a close-knit fellowship”.

He encouraged members to get a copy of the Church’s recommended book for Discipleship entitled The Principles of Christian Discipleship “to reference for education on any point of Christian doctrine on which we are in doubt and need clarification”.
