METHODISTS RENEW COVENANT WITH GOD

Story: Emmanuel Ashong, Accra

Church Services have been organised by Methodists across the country to renew their covenant with God.

Dubbed Covenant Sunday, Methodists in Ghana mark the first Sunday of the year with special Church Services to reaffirm their commitment to live for God and die to self.

The Methodist Bishop of Accra Diocese, the Rt Rev Emmanuel Borlabi Bortey led congregants at the Wesley Cathedral, Accra on Sunday, January 02, 2022 to undergo the annual tradition of the Church. The congregants, who were mostly clad in white apparel, were challenged to align their will to God’s.

“I am no longer my own. I belong to you. Your will, not mine be done in all things. Associate me with whom you will. Let me be of service, even if it means suffering”, the Covenant said in part.

Preaching a sermon on the theme “Renewing our Covenant with God”, Bishop Borlabi Bortey recounted that when God rescued Israel from oppressive rule in Egypt, He entered into an agreement with them to be their God and they in turn, His people, living in obedience to His commandments and worshipping no other god.

Israel, he however noted, constantly failed in observing God’s commandment, a situation he described as “symptomatic of human nature”, adding “This is the reason why God Himself stepped into our world in the person of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.”

Citing Psalm 50:10, the Rt Rev Borlabi Bortey assured congregants of God’s ability to transform man's sinful nature to align to His will. “God removes our stubborn hearts of stone and gives us a heart of flesh as prophesied by Jeremiah and Ezekiel”, he stressed. He therefore encouraged the congregants to put their faith in Jesus and seek first God’s kingdom, “...and He will add all other things unto us”, he added.

The Superintendent Minister of the Accra Circuit, the Very Rev Dr Nana Kwesi Bart-Plange prayed for members to keep their covenant with God.

Similar Church Services were held at Methodist Societies in all the 24 Circuits within the Accra Diocese.
