‘JESUS CAN SAVE YOU AS HE SAVED ME’ - METHODIST MINISTER TO BUKOM RESIDENTS

Story: Emmanuel Ashong, Accra

The Superintendent Minister of the Mamprobi Circuit of The Methodist Church Ghana, the Very Rev Samuel K. Quartey has made a passionate appeal to residents of Bukom in the Accra South Circuit of the Church to give their lives to Jesus.

Bukom is the hub of boxing in Ghana, responsible for churning out many of the nation’s great boxers including one time WBC featherweight and super-featherweight champion, Azumah Nelson, former WBA welterweight title holder, Ike ‘Bazooka’ Quartey, and Super heavyweight boxer, Braimah Kamoko also known as Bukom Banku.

Situated at the heart of Ghana’s capital, Bukom is densely populated and seen by many as a hub of deviant activities including abuse of illicit drugs and teenage pregnancy. But speaking on Wednesday, February 23, 2022 at the opening of a 3-day outreach programme, dubbed Wesleyan Revival Outreach, organised by the Accra Diocese of The Methodist Church Ghana, at the Bukom AstroTurf, Very Rev Quartey disclosed that he was born and raised in the area and engaged in some of the deviant behaviours associated with the area but was nonetheless saved and used by God.

“I want you to know that I am your brother, a native of this land, born and raised here in Bukom. I played football with many teams in this area. I schooled and worked from here and in this same area, I received a calling to be a Minister of God”, Very Rev Quartey narrated.

He noted that, “The God who called me from here can also call you. Whatever activity you are engaged in today, I have done before but God loved me and redeemed me from it. He can save you also today if you accept Him. He loves you and He’s calling you today”.

Explaining the purpose of the Revival Outreach in the area, the Synod Secretary of the Accra Diocese, the Very Rev Victor B. B. Boyetey disclosed that it was aimed at reminding residents of the faithfulness of God since the inception of the Church in the area some 120 years ago, adding, “Many great things have happened in this community through this chapel you are seeing” [pointing to the old chapel of the Rev Thomas Birch Freeman Memorial Methodist Church, located at the Bukom Square. He encouraged residents to emulate the good steps taken by pioneers of the Church to continue in the faith.

Many residents gave their lives to God during an altar call by the Very Rev Quartey. Prayers were said for the new converts.
