Story: Sarah Naa Merley Mensah & Emmanuel Ashong, Accra

The Rev Thomas Birch Freeman Memorial Methodist Church at James Town in Accra has organised a Thanksgiving Service on Sunday, February 27, 2022 to climax the Church’s 120th Anniversary celebrations.

The Church which is situated at James Town in Accra Central, was originally located at Bukom, another suburb of Ghana’s capital city.

Named after British Missionary, the Rev Thomas Birch Freeman, who is credited with the introduction of Methodism in Accra, Kumasi and other parts of West Africa, the Church has since its inception in 1902 contributed significantly to the social and spiritual life of residents in the Ga Mashie area.

Clad in their resplendent 120th Anniversary clothes, members of the Church took to the streets of Bukom in a brief procession to express their joy to the Lord for how far He had brought them.

Preaching at the Service, which coincided with the climax of a 3-day Wesleyan Revival Outreach organised by the Accra Diocese of The Methodist Church Ghana, the Methodist Bishop of Accra, the Rt Rev Emmanuel Borlabi Bortey charged members to continue the positive legacy pioneers of the Church bequeathed to them. He prayed for members to “live the transformed life in Jesus Christ” and expressed the hope that, that transformation will positively impart the society.

The event which was organised at the Bukom AstroTurf, was attended by representatives of traditional authorities in the area and leaders of other churches including the Anglican Bishop of Accra, the Rt Rev Daniel Sylvanus Mensah Torto, who revealed that his mother was an active Methodist presently worshiping with the Rev Thomas Birch Freeman Memorial Society. He admonished the congregants to live in harmony with one another and let goodness prevail over evil at all times.

A special fund raising exercise was undertaken to support activities of the Church.
